Melasma is a skin condition that is cosmetically troubling; it is a benign chronic hyperpigmentation of the skin. It can look symmetrical with red, brown or gray patches, blotches or freckle-like spots.
Melasma is most commonly seen on the face, but in rare cases can occur on other sun-exposed areas. It is more common in individuals with darker skin tones, and can be hereditary in some cases.
This discolouration is caused by overproduction of pigment in the skin that is stimulated by certain triggers, such as sun exposure, hormones, and skin irritation. Sun exposure is the most common trigger for Melasma when UVA and UVB light are absorbed into unprotected skin.
Hormones can also trigger Melasma in both women and men. The most common hormonal change in women that triggers this is pregnancy, commonly referred to as “the pregnancy mask.” Menopause can be another culprit. The key point in management of Melasma is the use of sun protection all the times.
